CRA Logbook FAQ

This page covers Canada only. For Canadian users, RoadStance is designed around the CRA full-logbook method. RoadStance also supports workflows for the IRS (United States), HMRC (United Kingdom), and ATO (Australia); see the main FAQ.

Scope: The optional CRA simplified sample-logbook method is not automated in RoadStance.
Do we need CRA simplified logbook support?

No. The simplified logbook is an optional method. Many filers use full-year detailed records under the full-logbook pathway. For CRA purposes, RoadStance intentionally supports one record-keeping pathway: the full logbook. Whether your records meet CRA requirements in your situation is for you and your tax professional to confirm.

Which CRA method does RoadStance follow?

RoadStance is built around the full-logbook workflow, including:

  1. Trip-by-trip records with date, time, destination, purpose, and distance
  2. Per-vehicle separation of records
  3. Odometer period checks for report readiness
  4. Receipt linking as supporting evidence
What is not automated in RoadStance?

The optional simplified sample-logbook workflow is not automated, including base-year and sample-period ratio calculations.

What if my accountant prefers the simplified method?

You can use RoadStance for full-logbook records and maintain any simplified-method calculations separately with your accountant.

Is RoadStance providing tax advice?

No. RoadStance provides record-keeping tools. Tax treatment depends on each taxpayer's facts, so confirm filing positions and method suitability with a qualified advisor.
